The Power of Story

I have long been interested in how just allowing a patient to tell her/his story can in itself be a source of healing. Dr. Rachel Naomi Remen in her best-selling book, Kitchen Table Wisdom, says it best.

“Everybody is a story. When I was a child, people sat around kitchen tables and told their stories. We don’t do that so much any more. Sitting around the table telling stories is not just a way of passing time. It is the way the wisdom gets passed along. The stuff that helps us to live a life worth remembering. Despite the awesome powers of technology many of us still do not live very well. We may need to listen to each other’s stories again.”

Let this be the year you tell your story. Not sure where to start? There are some great resources available. Here is one suggestion.

May we all recognize in this New Year that the moments of our lives are rare and precious. Open to them, Bask in them, We are alive.

Thank you Dr. Elisha Goldstein for this insight. His blog, found at http://blogs.psychcentral.com/ is one of the best on the web, and I check into it often.

Well, I finally did it !

After over fifteen years of study and procrastination, I finally gathered the courage to take my board exam in Integrative and Holistic Medicine this December 2010– and PASSED! I want to sincerely thank all my patients and family for the love and support they have lent me on this journey these past many years. It is remarkable to think how the field of Integrative Medicine has evolved from “Complementary and Alternative Medicine” to “Holistic Medicine” and now “Integrative Holistic Medicine”. A fusion of the best of evidence-based conventional and natural therapies. A partnership between healer and patient. An understanding of the role that mind, body, spirit, and earth play in our balance of health and illness. In my heart of hearts, I believe that this is the “good medicine” that ALL of us wish for ourselves and our families. In Health,
